Laser Treatment of Pigmented Lesions Most of us are born with various birthmarks, even if it’s only a few freckles. Other pigmented lesions may be of greater cosmetic concern, such as café-au-lait spots, or those acquired with age, called solar lentigines (age spots). Women may also acquire skin pigmentation associated with pregnancy, childbirth, oral contraceptives, or estrogen replacement therapy. Pigmented lesions are all the result of the accumulation of excess melanin, the substance that gives our skin its color. Traditional methods for the removal of pigmented lesions include camouflage makeup, dermabrasion, chemical peeling, and surgical excision. Recently several lasers have been developed that treat these unwanted pigmented lesions. A laser is a concentrated beam of light that is aimed at the skin. The lasers used to treat pigmented lesions target the melanin in these lesions. The melanin is vaporized into much smaller molecules that are then absorbed and removed by the body. How painful is the procedure? Minor discomfort is experienced when the laser is fired, often described as a rubber band being snapped on the skin. Where is the procedure performed? The procedure is performed in Dr. Revis’ office or in an outpatient surgery center. How long does the procedure take? Usually no longer than thirty minutes. What can I expect during the recovery period? For the first day, the treated areas may appear slightly red and swollen. Occasionally, crusting will occur. It is important that you keep the treated area clean and resist the temptation to pick at any crusting that might be present. Are multiple treatments necessary? Multiple treatments are sometimes necessary for more darkly pigmented lesions. Small, lightly colored lesions are usually gone after one treatment. How often may I receive a treatment? Dr. Revis requires at least six weeks between sessions for healing to occur. At this point, results may be accurately assessed from the previous session.
