FAQ's:

How does the system work?

The On-Q Postop-Op Pain Relief System is intended to provide a continuous infusion of local anesthetic directly into the operative site for postoperative pain relief. This system includes a small round pump filled with a local anesthetic to treat your pain after surgery. The pump is attached to a small catheter near your incision site. The pump automatically delivers the medication at a very slow, continuous flow rate.

What medication(s) are delivered through the pump?

Typically this is a combination of local anesthetics consisting of lidocaine (Xylocaine) and bupivicaine (Marcaine).

Can the pump be used in patients with latex sensitivity?

Yes. The pump does not contain latex in the fluid pathway. The PVC bag that surrounds the pump eliminates the risk of contact dermatitis that can occur when latex comes into contact with the skin.

How long may I use the pump postoperatively?

Although the pump can hold enough medication to deliver a continuous stream for up to five days, it is usually used for shorter periods of time, such as the initial 48 hours following surgery.

Is there a greater risk of infection with a catheter in the wound?

An internal audit was conducted that compared reported cases of infection in patients using the On-Q pump to data available from the CDC (The Centers for Disease Control) which surveyed the incidence of surgical site infections. When compared to this CDC data, the On-Q system did not appear to increase the risk of surgical site infections.

Will I need additional pain medications?

In a recent study, 33% of patients using the On-Q System required no additional or supplemental pain medications. The remaining 67% of patients did require supplemental pain medications, but at a greatly reduced rate.

How is the catheter removed?

Dr. Revis will remove the catheter in the office. This is a painless procedure that does not require any anesthetics.

How much does the system cost?

The system adds an additional $450 to the cost of your procedure
